Roadtrip Thursday!!

Well I’m off today with my Bestie a d my youngest daughter and Grandbaby to a BIG tack store in Brantford! Having their yearly sale…

No I don’t own a horse but my Daughter has 3 and my friends daughter has a bunch so off we go !!

Hopefully we don’t pass a nursery on our travels ….I have a problem when it comes to plants ! …..oh but I need a few annuals…….🤔

Me at a plant nursery !!

Native plants

What are native plants and why are they important? Well native plants are …well..native to your specific area and because of that they produce exactly the type of food that is necessary for all the little critters that may visit your garden . The bees , butterflies, birds…oh I’m passionate about my birds! Squirrels…I know we all have a love/hate relationship with those cuties !!

I live near the river Thames and also very close to downtown and I’m always surpri³sed at the varied wildlife that visits my garden ! Bunnies ..raccoons..skunks ..even a possum once!

Also native plants will be practically guaranteed to grow and be easy maintenance! I’m  all about low maintenance! If something doesn’t  do well over a couple of seasons I’ll  probably ask it out …right now I’ve  been arguing with a variegated lace cap hydrangea …not native I’m sure…! Its been here for 18 yrs and doesn’t like to bloom ! Oh well I’ll see how it does this year and decide if I’m done with it !!

If you aren’t sure what plants to buy for your area ask at any good garden center…most of the larger ones will have a native plant section. Of course you need to know each plants light requirements so you will give them adequate light or shade !

See you later!! The garden is tucked in for the night !

Contemplating !!
Early days !

Its finally Spring!!

I have to tell you winter here in Canada seems to go on forever! I’ve been itching to get out in the gardens ! Finally plants are springing up ..sorry for the pun !… and I’ve been getting dirty!!

My wonderful husband of 3 years ..John…put some new wood around veggie patch and we amended the soil with triple mix ,my own compost and composted manure from my daughters little farm . That’s alot of goodness going in so I’m expecting amazing things to come out of my garden !

I’ll plant what we like to eat and yes I like easy to grow veg! So far there will be carrots , beets ,kale, swiss chard, onions , peas …for hubby…lettuces and heirloom tomatoes …they have the best flavor !!

I like to keep things simple …grow what is easy and reliable and what we like to eat !

Oh and some cucumbers which I’ll grow up on an old obelisk that’s not being used for a flowering vine. It sits in a flower bed! Combining flowers and vegetables is called in France a partarge`…sorry probably spelt that wrong ! Does anyone know how to spell it !!??

As far as my perennial beds we have cleaned them up as I don’t do too much in the fall. The seed heads on many plants like Milkweed( which I encourage for the Monarch butterflies) Sedum ,Blackeyed Susan’s and Purple Cone Flower ,feed the birds throughout the winter and dead foliage gives shelter to many beneficial insects and other creatures.

I find it’s easier to clean up in spring when things have died down…grasses and hostas leaves especially !

Last week I split some of my perennials that were to big or crowded…also easier to do when they are small. I put them out to the street all nicely labeled and within a couple of hours they had gone off to new homes ! If you have a spring garage sale you can put out your extra plants and make a bit of coin from them !

Well till next time happy gardening ..I’ll share some pics and update what’s happening in my Little Green Cottage !

All about me!

Hi everyone ! My name is Jaye and I am so excited to finally have my blog!

I retired from Dental Assisting 3 years ago and have no problem keeping busy !

I live in London Ontario in a 144 year old Heritage Ontario Cottage in the Heritage area of London once the village of Petersville ! When I bought my house in 2005 I was single and I have to say I fell in love with the small cosy home and especially the perennial gardens front and back ! It became my sanctuary and a place of healing .

I have three Grown Children and 5 Grandchildren age 8,6,4,17 months and 7 months! My husband of almost 4 years John has 4 kids and 6 Grandkids ! To say I’m pretty blessed is an understatement !

When I’m not getting lots of hugs and cuddles from the wee ones I keep busy with many hobbies ! Watercolour painting , baking , quilting and other sewing ,assorted crafts , gardening , and trying to live a greener more eco friendly life !

I really wanted to start this blog to help others see how easy it really is to make more conscious choices when shopping ,cleaning ,decorating your home or buying your clothes . I will share what I’ve found works and I would love it if you could share what you do !

Well let’s get started! Its spring so the gardens are up!
